On March 11, 2007, RPN began a partnership with the Solar Entertainment Corporation, which began co-producing new programming for the network, such as a local version of America’s Next Top Model. The network underwent management changes on December 24, 2007, as Tonypet Albano (undersecretary and executive director of Malaca?ang’s Office of Political Coalition Affairs and Deputy Spokesperson of TEAM Unity) was appointed chairman of the network (replacing Education Undersecretary Mona Valisno, incumbent Presidential Assistant for Education). Undersecretary Robert Rivera was appointed director of the board, while the president and chief executive officer became former senator Orlando Mercado.

Mercado’s first major move was to extend their partnership with Solar Entertainment, with programming from their cable network C/S premiering on RPN at the start of the new year. On May 27, 2008, it was announced that RPN would become a broadcaster of Philippine Basketball Association games starting in the 2008-09 season as part of a three-year contract with Solar Sports, who would provide supplemental coverage of the league on their cable network Basketball TV.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.

The roots of mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, although professional MMA events had been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety.[1] Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport.[2]

The name mixed martial arts was coined by Rick Blume, president and CEO of Battlecade, in 1995.[3] Following these changes, the sport has seen increased popularity with pay per view reach rivalling boxing and professional wrestling.

WWE SmackDown is a professional wrestling television program for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). As of 2010[update] it airs on MyNetworkTV in the United States as WWE Friday Night SmackDown. The show's name is also used to refer to the SmackDown brand, in which WWE employees are assigned to work and perform on that program; the other program and brand currently being Raw. It is currently the only television broadcast for the SmackDown brand, though at one point WWE Velocity also featured SmackDown branded wrestling.

From its launch in 1999, SmackDown broadcast on Thursday nights, but as of September 9, 2005, the show moved to Friday nights. The show originally debuted in the United States on the UPN television network on August 26, 1999, but after the merger of UPN and the WB, SmackDown began airing on The CW in 2006. The show remained on the CW network for two years until it was announced that it would move to MyNetworkTV in October 2008.[3][4] SmackDown is set to move from MyNetworkTV to Syfy in October 2010.[5][6]

TV Azteca broadcasts the show in Mexico; Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports HD carry it on Friday nights in the United Kingdom and Ireland. (Due to time differences, SmackDown premieres a few hours earlier in Ireland and United Kingdom and a day earlier in Australia, India and Philippines than the United States.)
